At VeinInnovations, our Atlanta vein specialists offer a number of state-of-the-art treatments for venous diseases. However, we also believe in using conservative treatments for some of the less-serious conditions as long as they are safe and effective. After our doctors make a diagnosis, we discuss all available treatment options with our patients. If their problem can be safely treated using a conservative approach and that’s what they prefer, our team works with them to make that treatment as effective as possible. Following are a few conservative treatments for varicose veins and other vein problems.

Compression Stockings/Socks

Compression stockings can help reduce swelling and the achy, heavy feeling that can come with circulatory problems in the legs. You may have known someone who was prescribed them following surgery or an injury if they are going to be confined for a long period. That’s because they can help prevent blood clots that can result from inactivity.

Compression stockings do not improve the appearance of spider or varicose veins, nor do they eliminate the symptoms associated with venous disease. Compression is encouraged for patients who do not want to seek treatment right away but need temporary relief of their heavy, tired, achy legs.

Leg Elevation

This sounds simple, but many people actually are not doing it correctly. Just putting your legs up on a foot stool will not adequately improve circulation. You need to elevate them so you’re your feet are above your heart. That will help ensure that blood is making its way from your legs to your heart.

Lifestyle Changes

There are many aspects of our generally-sedentary lifestyle that can cause or exacerbate circulatory issues and vein diseases. We recommend that our patients do a few things, to the extent that they are able:

  • Avoid sitting or standing for long periods. It’s best to get up and walk around every 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Get regular exercise, even if it’s just taking a daily walk.
  • Stay within the recommended weight guidelines for your height and gender. Excess weight can inhibit circulation.

If you’re having discomfort or other issues that you think may be caused by a vein problem, it’s essential to get an accurate diagnosis. VeinInnovations provides “start-to-finish” diagnosis and treatment for venous disease. We’re the first comprehensive vein clinic in Atlanta to do so.
