men and vein treatment

Many people think of varicose veins as a condition that primarily affects women. Women are more prone to them than men. However, at least half of all men develop varicose veins -– usually once they get into middle age. Our Atlanta vein doctors treat a lot of male patients.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Many of the same factors that can cause varicose veins in women apply to men, including:

  • Heredity
  • long periods of sitting
  • Obesity
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Trauma to the legs
  • weightlifting

Varicose veins often result from damage or weakening of the vein walls. This impacts circulation and can cause the blood to pool in the veins. That’s what creates enlarged, discolored varicose veins.

Why It’s Important to Treat Varicose Veins

At our Atlanta vein centers, we see a lot of men who have put off having their varicose veins treated because they thought of them primarily as a cosmetic issue –- until they were more than that. The circulatory problems that can cause varicose veins can cause a multitude of other symptoms, including discomfort or even pain, swelling and heaviness and fatigue. All of these can impact your quality of life.

In more serious cases, they can lead to skin ulcers and even blood clots. Therefore, it’s important to get a proper diagnosis of the underlying vascular issues that are causing your varicose veins and/or other symptoms. At VeinInnovations, we have the latest in ultrasound technology that shows us exactly what and where the problem is.

Once we’ve determined that, we can recommend the best treatment. Sometimes a conservative treatment like compression stockings (lots of men wear them!) will help. Other times, we recommend one of our non-invasive vein removal treatments.

We perform all of our treatments on an outpatient basis at our conveniently-located clinics throughout the Atlanta area. Most of our patients are finished within an hour or less and go on about their day. No one has to know you’ve had it done if you don’t want them to. However, your legs will start feeling better very soon, and you can go back to the activities you may have had to curtail. Plus, you won’t hesitate to wear shorts the next time you play golf, go to the gym or take a beach vacation.
