jeune-femme-sportive-jogging Sclerotherapy is a vein treatment that’s been around since the 1930s, but it’s advanced considerably over the years. The sclerotherapy vein treatment procedure that we use at VeinInnovations is minimally invasive.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution (called sclerosant) into each damaged vein using a micro needle. That solution used at VeinInnovations is painless and causes the vein to collapse. It is naturally absorbed into the bloodstream. Meanwhile, blood automatically redirects to the healthy veins, improving circulation.

Sclerotherapy is one of many treatment options that we offer at our Atlanta vein centers. After a thorough ultrasound diagnosis, we will recommend the best type of treatment for you. If we believe that sclerotherapy is a good option, we will, of course, give you the pros and cons so that you can make an informed decision. Following are a few:

Pros of Sclerotherapy

  • No anesthesia is required, and patients report little if any discomfort during or after the procedure.
  • It’s recognized as a safe and effective medical treatment for spider veins, and is even being covered by most insurance companies if disease is found.
  • The injections are booked in 15 or 30 minute increments and generally requires no downtime afterwards.

Cons of Sclerotherapy

  • It’s generally recommended only for small varicose veins and spider veins. For patients with larger varicose veins, our Atlanta vein specialists will often recommend one of our laser or radio-frequency ablation procedures.
  • As with many vein procedures, more than one treatment may be required. We can let you know how many treatments you’ll need if we recommend sclerotherapy for you.
  • Some patients experience temporary redness, bruising or swelling at the injection site. This usually fades within a few days.
  • If a strong concentration of sclerosant is needed, there may be some discoloration or scaring afterwards, but that’s uncommon.
