Multi-generation family having fun together outdoors

One of the risk factors for vein disease is family history.  As our Atlanta vein specialists tell our patients, if your parents or grandparents suffered from varicose veins, you are more likely to develop them.  Just because other family members have varicose veins, that doesn’t mean that you’ll necessarily develop them but if you start to have any symptoms including visible spider or varicose veins, heaviness or tiredness in the legs, please seek an evaluation to determine whether this hereditary condition is affecting you.

How Can You Help Prevent Vein Disease?

Unfortunately, there is no real way to prevent vein disease but taking care of your vein health really just involves doing things that will improve your overall health. This includes:

  • Exercising regularly to improve circulation and vein strength: Doing some type of aerobic activity every day that get your legs moving is particularly important. This can include walking, bicycling, swimming or running, depending on your fitness level.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight: Obesity can increase the risk of developing varicose veins because the veins have to work harder to circulate the blood. A high-fiber diet rich in leafy greens, vegetables fruit and grains but low in sodium is important for vein health.
  • Avoid sitting or standing for long periods: Many people’s jobs demand that they do one or the other. However, if you have a desk job, take a few minutes at least every hour to stand up and stretch your legs. Take a walk every few hours if possible. If you can elevate your legs while you’re seated at your desk (or at least at home), you’ll help the blood flow back up the legs. If you have to be on your feet all day, shift your weight between legs every few minutes.
