BR-ba1Ambulatory phlebectomy (AP) is a scary-sounding name. However, this vein removal procedure, like all of our varicose vein treatments at VeinInnovations, is a minimally-invasive outpatient procedure that requires little or no downtime afterwards. AP is used to remove superficial veins close to the skin that have become diseased or damaged.

What Happens During and After an Ambulatory Phlebectomy?

This procedure involves making tiny incisions in the skin. Then the diseased veins are removed through the slits created by the incisions. Local anesthesia is used, so patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. The incisions are so small there are no stitches involved, and the cosmetic result, once healed, is remarkable.

The AP usually follows a radio-frequency ablation procedure. Once the problem veins are removed, blood will automatically reroute to healthy veins, improving circulation. Patients will begin to feel relief from the unpleasant symptoms they’ve likely been experiencing like swelling, pain and fatigue and their varicose veins will begin to fade.

Like all of our vein treatment procedures, ambulatory phlebectomy requires little if any downtime afterwards. Many patients leave our office and go back to their normal activities right away.

Accurate Diagnosis is the First Step

Before AP or any vein treatment is recommended, our doctors will do a duplex ultrasound examination to determine the extent of your vein disease and which veins are impacted. From there, we’ll recommend the treatment option(s) best suited to treat your particular situation as effectively as possible. The ultimate decision is yours, but we want you to have all of the information and address any questions and concerns you have.

Most Ambulatory Phlebectomies Are Covered by Health Insurance and Medicare

Most insurance companies as well as Medicare cover at least part of the cost of an ambulatory phlebectomy because it’s used to treat vein disease. We work with these providers to supply all of the information they need about the medical necessity of the procedure for you.
