Many people’s beliefs about varicose veins and vein disease are based on what they’ve heard over the years from parents, grandparents, friends and even primary care physicians. The fact is that the diagnosis and treatment of vein disease have improved significantly in recent decades. So has our knowledge about the causes and treatments.

At VeinInnovations, our Atlanta vein specialists use the latest diagnostic technology to determine the exact cause of our patients’ varicose veins. We then recommend one or more of our minimally-invasive treatments to remove the problematic vein(s).

However, we also consider it our responsibility to educate our patients about vein disease and to debunk the myths. Here are some common ones:

Myth #1: Varicose veins are purely a cosmetic issue, so if their appearance doesn’t bother me, there’s no reason to get rid of my varicose veins.

Fact: Varicose veins are a symptom of some type of vein disease. Vein disease, if left untreated, they can lead to skin breakdown and ulcerations. They can make your legs feel heavy, uncomfortable and fatigued. Vein disease also causes symptoms similar to restless leg syndrome and can affect your sleep. It can significantly impact your mobility and quality of life.

Myth #2: Vein removal treatments aren’t covered by insurance.

Fact: Vein disease is a recognized medical condition. Therefore, treatment for it is covered, at least in part, by most insurers, including Medicare. At VeinInnovations, we work closely with insurers to provide evidence of the medical necessity of our patients’ varicose vein treatments.

Myth #3: Only women and older people get varicose veins.

Truth: As people get into their 50’s and older, they are more likely to suffer from varicose veins because their veins simply start to wear down. Vein conditions are more common in women than in men, but not by a significant margin.

Vein disease can occur in anyone at any age (even in childhood) if veins become damaged. That’s why no one should ignore symptoms of vein disease.

Myth #4: We need all of our veins, so they shouldn’t be removed or closed off as they are when treated.

Fact: That’s a common misconception that we hear from patients. However, we only treat the veins that are damaged or weakened to the point where they’re not working properly.

Removing or closing off damaged veins has no negative impact on a person’s circulation – only a positive one. The healthy veins simply take over the job that the damagedvein disease treatment veins were trying to do.

Myth #5: Varicose vein treatments are painful and invasive.

Fact: That used to be the case, but the technology of vein removal has improved significantly. Our board-certified vein doctors have expertise in a variety of laser vein removal procedures and other minimally-invasive treatments that are virtually painless and require little or no downtime.

There’s no reason to have to live with varicose veins or the other symptoms of vein disease that can keep you from being as active as you’d like. Call us or contact us online today to schedule an appointment with one of our Atlanta vein doctors.
