In our time as Atlanta vein specialists, we have heard a wide variety of myths that people believe about varicose vein treatment. We want to dispel some of the more popular and pervasive of these myths.

Any doctor is qualified to treat varicose veins.

All doctors have specialties, so the simple truth is that not all doctors have the experience needed to treat varicose veins. Your general physician may be qualified to examine your varicose veins, but they will typically recommend that you see a vein specialist for treatment.

Vein problems are only aesthetic.

This is a dangerous assumption. While most varicose veins are not life-threatening and do not need immediate medical attention, some are dangerous. If you have painful ulcers, bleeding, infections or blood clots, you need to seek medical care immediately. If you are unsure as to whether your varicose veins are healthy, we encourage you to have them checked. Even if they are not life-threatening, you may still want to have them treated given that the underlying cause of the varicose veins can also produce pain, heaviness and restlessness in the legs. After all, life is too short to be unhappy about how you look or to let veins interfere with your everyday activities.

Vein treatment is for vanity.

Some of our patients do seek out treatment for their varicose vein problems for aesthetic reasons, but many others seek treatment because their veins cause them pain or are presenting health problems. Those who do want to look better do so because they feel it will improve their lives.

Treatments are not affordable.

Varicose veins are a medical issue, and we believe no one should be denied treatment because of their financial status. Your insurance and the diagnostic ultrasound performed in our office will determine whether your treatments will be covered under your health plan. Over 90% of our procedures are covered by insurance. We will work with you to determine whether your insurance covers vein treatments or figure out a payment schedule that works for you.

Treatment options are experimental, painful, invasive or risky.

The techniques developed to treat varicose veins have a success rate of approximately 95% after 5 years. We perform these techniques routinely and our patients are extremely happy with the cosmetic results along with the new feeling of light, healthy legs.
